Getting to Know the Collective

A community for spiritual refugees in Virginia Highland
September 15, 2025
Morgan Sangster

We sat down with Michael Schulte, founder of The Collective, to learn more about the growing spiritual community in Virginia Highland. For anyone who hasn’t heard of it, Michael describes The Collective as a “community for spiritual refugees.” Founded in August 2023, it’s a church without walls, created for people who have been hurt by traditional churches or grown disillusioned with organized religion. The Collective radically affirms the humanity of all people, creates an inclusive spiritual community, and partners with local organizations to fight systemic injustice.

Why was The Collective created and how has it evolved?

Michael’s own journey inspired the creation of The Collective. In his 20s, he struggled to find a church community that aligned with his values while still feeling socially engaging. Evangelical churches offered connection but lacked inclusivity, and mainline churches aligned with his beliefs but had few peers his age. “The Collective seeks to bridge that gap,” Michael says. It’s a space where young people, and people of all ages, can foster meaningful community without checking their values at the door.

What values guide The Collective?

The Collective’s work centers on four values:

  • Love: Affirming the humanity of all people and celebrating God’s redemption in every life.
  • Solidarity: Building relationships with marginalized communities to partner in meaningful ways.
  • Abundance: Rejecting scarcity and giving generously, including donating 10% of offerings to local nonprofits.
  • Storytelling: Sharing diverse stories to show a progressive vision of God’s love for all.

How does The Collective engage with Virginia Highland?

Since moving to Virginia Highland in March 2025, The Collective has hosted worship at Virginia-Highland Church on the first and third Sundays of each month at 5:00 pm, followed by a free community meal open to everyone. They also run a twice-monthly small group for LGBTQIA+ Christians on Mondays at 7:00 pm. Looking ahead, The Collective plans to participate in the weekly Farmers Market, host children’s activities, and have a presence at neighborhood events like Porchfest.

What kinds of programs can people join?

The Collective offers three main ways to get involved:

  • Worship: First and third Sunday gatherings every month with Kids Church and a community meal.
  • Small Groups (StoryGroups): Meet in coffee shops, breweries, or on trails to form deeper connections.
  • Justice Events: Partner with local nonprofits to serve the unhoused, pack meals, and advocate for change.

How can someone take the first step?

Michael encourages anyone curious to start with a coffee chat at a local spot like Press & Grind. All visitors are also welcome at worship services. The next service is Sunday, September 21 at 5:00 pm, and then every first and third Sunday of the month.

Whether you’re looking for a fresh perspective on faith, a welcoming community, or ways to serve locally, The Collective offers a modern, inclusive, and meaningful approach to spirituality in Virginia Highland.
