Planning a visit to Ponce City Market or a day on the Atlanta BeltLine? Don't let the trail be the end of the itinerary. A short detour into Virginia Highland District adds something the larger destinations cannot: a walkable main street experience filled with independent shops, neighborhood restaurants, family-friendly stops and bars that keep the night going.
The Eastside Trail connects directly to Ponce City Market and runs alongside Virginia Highland District on its way toward Piedmont Park. From the trail, visitors can step into the district and discover North Highland Avenue, a historic small business corridor that stretches from Atkins Park to Morningside Village.
This guide offers three easy ways to add Virginia Highland District to the day. Choose the route that fits your day or mix things up into a plan of your own.
How to Connect the BeltLine and Virginia Highland District
Ponce City Market has direct access to the Atlanta BeltLine through its third-floor BeltLine entrance. From there, the Eastside Trail offers two useful ways to reach Virginia Highland District:
- For Atkins Park and the southern end of the district, use the Ponce de Leon Ave area and continue east toward North Highland Ave.
- For the Virginia-Highland intersection and the center of the shopping district, head north on the trail toward Piedmont Park, exit at Greenwood Ave and walk east to North Highland Ave.
Once you reach North Highland, restaurants, shops and entertainment are grouped into walkable blocks. You do not need to cover the entire district to experience the neighborhood; one section can easily fill an afternoon or evening.
The simplest planning rule: Choose one BeltLine access point and one Virginia Highland District business block. That keeps the day relaxed and leaves time to browse, discover something unexpected, and enjoy the walk between destinations.

Best for: families who want outdoor time, an easy meal, a little browsing, and a reward at the end.
Begin at Ponce City Market and Get Moving
Explore Ponce City Market, then join the Eastside Trail for a walk or bike ride toward Virginia Highland District. The trail gives children room to move and turns the trip between destinations into part of the experience rather than time spent in the car.
Play and Browse in the Neighborhood
Exit toward the center of the district and make John Howell Memorial Park your outdoor reset. The playground and open space are a useful break before slowing down at Virginia Highland Books, where everyone can browse for a new story, activity book or family read-aloud.
Families with older children can reserve a session at The Splatter Studio for a high-energy art experience. Intown Hardware is another fun optional stop when the day could use a small gardening, painting or weekend project to continue at home.
Choose an Easy Family Meal
Keep lunch flexible. Pielands offers pizza, subs and an easy counter-service stop; Doc Chey's serves familiar pan-Asian comfort food; Alon's is useful for sandwiches, salads, pastries and picnic-friendly choices. Trade the Food Hall for a Neighborhood Coffee Stop
After time at Ponce City Market and on the trail, head into Virginia Highland District for coffee at PERC, Ash Coffee, Press & Grind or San Francisco Coffee Roasting Co. Each creates an easy pause before exploring North Highland Ave on foot.
Browse Atlanta’s Front Porch
Virginia Highland District is most rewarding when you leave room to wander. Browse trendy clothing at Dakota J's and Moosh, discover small-batch jewelry at Mickey Lynn, pick up a new title at Virginia Highland Books or stop at Highland Fine Wine for a bottle to take home. The shops are independent, varied and close enough together that the browsing feels like one connected experience.

Let the afternoon become dinner. 3. From BeltLine Afternoon to Virginia Highland District After Dark
Best for: adults who want to combine an active afternoon with dinner, music and a late-night stop without moving the car between every venue.
Choose the Mood for Dinner
For a lively start, try Whiskey Bird, Ela, Bar.bacoa or Rosa. For a more classic neighborhood dinner, choose Murphy's, La Tavola, Highland Tap or Atkins Park. At the southern end of the district, Truva, Osteria 832, Surin of Thailand and Ocean Wave create an easy lead-in to the district's nightlife.
Follow the Music or Find a Favorite Bar
Atkins Park is the strongest block for turning dinner into a night out. Catch live blues at Blind Willie's, settle into the easygoing atmosphere at Dad's, continue to Limerick Junction or Neighbor's Pub, or stop at Atkins Park for a drink in a tavern that has anchored the neighborhood for generations.
Closer to the Virginia-Highland intersection, Moe's & Joe's, George's, Fontaine's Oyster House and Highland Tap offer a different mix of longtime neighborhood bars, seafood, sports and classic cocktails.
